Manhattan Rents Soar

It may or may not be a leading sign of economic recovery, but rents in Manhattan are surging back to their all-time high.

Manhattan apartment rents continued to soar through the roof in January and are now getting close to hitting historic highs. The average price of a rental apartment was a whopping $3,352, up 5% compared with January, 2011, according to a report from Citi Habitats. Manhattan rents are now just $42 away from the peak of $3,394 reached in May 2007. January prices were up across all apartment types, with the average three-bedroom apartment going for $5,026, a 4% jump.

Apartments in my small 20-unit building are never vacant for longer than a weekend.

Tomorrow: NY Giants Ticker-Tape Parade

It's been decades since ticker-tape went the way of the rotary phone, but that's what they're calling tomorrow's Manhattan celebration for the Giants. But good luck getting anywhere within sight of the players as millions are expected to descend on the Canyon Of Heroes.

New York City will be hosting a ticker-tape parade and City Hall ceremony for Super Bowl champions New York Giants Tuesday. The city will be conducting a public giveaway for tickets to the City Hall Plaza ceremony today between 9 a .m. and 11 a.m. People can access an entry form at www.nyc.gov and by calling 311. The parade will start at Battery Place and Washington Street at 11 a.m. and continue up the "Canyon of Heroes" to Worth Street. It will be followed by a ceremony at City Hall Plaza where Mayor Michael Bloomberg will present the Giants with the Keys to the City. Bloomberg announced the parade for Big Blue moments after the Giants defeated the New England Patriots 21-17 Sunday night.

Like New Year's Eve in Times Square, a ticker-tape parade is one of those uniquely NYC events that I've always wanted to experience once, but also know I'd hate once I got in the middle of it.
