The 18-year-old daughter of award-winning singer and actress Whitney Houston, who died suddenly last weekend, has been rushed to hospital.

Bobbi Kristina Brown was taken to a Los Angeles hospital to be treated for strees.

A tribute is being planned forHouston at the Grammy Awards ceremony.

Houston died aged 48 in a Beverly Hills hotel on Saturday (local time), triggering shock and a wave of tributes as music stars gathered for the annual awards show.

The pop legend, whose hits include I Will Always Love You, was found dead in her room at the Beverly Hilton, hours before a traditional pre-Grammys dinner hosted by veteran producer Clive Davis, who discovered and developed Houston.

The cause of her death is not known at this stage.

Police confirmed her death in a brief statement outside the hotel.

"At 3:55pm, Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at the Beverly Hilton hotel," police spokesman Mark Rosen said.

He said a member of Houston's entourage called 911 after the singer was found on the floor of her room.

Mr Rosen said attempts were made to resuscitate her, but failed.

"There were no obvious signs of criminal intent at this time, and it is being investigated by the Beverly Hills police department," he said.

Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys, told the audience at the pre-Grammys dinner that Jennifer Hudson would sing a tribute to Houston at Sunday night's Grammy Awards.

"We will do something appropriate tomorrow, and nothing could be more appropriate than having Jennifer Hudson sing on stage for Whitney," he said.

"In our community, we celebrate things ... let's celebrate Whitney Houston."

Mr Portnow called Houston: "one of the world's greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades."

Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich told CNN that whatever would be staged would be "respectful" while highlighting Houston's stunning music.

"Knowing Whitney as I did ... she knew the importance of thrilling an audience, and that's what we still plan to do," he said.

Musicians, many already in Los Angeles ahead of the awards show, have lined up to pay tribute to the singer, who sold over 170 million records before descending into a very public battle with substance abuse.

"It's a tragedy. Whitney Houston was the greatest singer I've ever heard and she will be truly missed," veteran crooner Tony Bennett said on the red carpet at the Beverly Hills hotel, where Houston's body was found in her fourth floor room.

Condolences poured in on Twitter from shocked fans and from the famous, as sadness over the news spread through the entertainment world.

"Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend ... She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth," Mariah Carey wrote.

Smokey Robinson told CNN: "I will always love her. She is one of the greatest voices in the history of music."

Houston's godmother, singer Aretha Franklin, says she is stunned by the death.

"I just can't talk about it now," she said in a statement.

"It's so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn't believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen.

"My heart goes out to Cissy, her daughter Bobbi Kris, her family and Bobby (Brown)."

With a ferociously powerful voice and a dazzling range, Houston achieved stardom as a pop-soul singer known as The Voice and the Queen of Pop. She also appeared in hit movies like Waiting to Exhale and The Bodyguard.

From a musical family that included mother Cissy Houston, a gospel star, and Dionne Warwick, her cousin, Whitney Houston started out as a teen model and then made a dazzling segue to music.

Her hits included How Will I Know, Saving All My Love For You, and I Will Always Love You.

Houston's trove of six Grammy awards included one for record of the year - for a soaring cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You, and another for album of the year for The Bodyguard.

Houston, who grew up in New Jersey, was also a supporter of the anti-apartheid movement and South Africa's Nelson Mandela, on whose behalf she campaigned during his imprisonment.

She struggled with substance abuse, which took a toll on her health and career.

Houston suffered a major career setback after admitting drug use during a relationship with ex-husband Bobby Brown, which was dogged with claims of spousal abuse.

Brown was one of the hottest rhythm and blues singers in the late 1980s and early 90s, but became better known as the husband of Houston and for his frequent brushes with drugs and the law.

The pair, who were divorced in 2007, starred in a television reality series, Being Bobby Brown, that featured their marriage, warts and all.

Whitney Houston dead at 48

Famed singer Whitney Houston has died at the age of 48, according to ABC News. The cause of her death remains unknown. News of her passing came from her publicist, Kristen Foster.

Houston was pronounced dead today at 3:55 p.m. PST at the Luxury Beverly Hills Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. Police said that there were no obvious signs of foul play at this time and it's being investigated by Beverly Hills detectives. She was there presumably preparing to go to Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party.

Most recently, Houston had been working on a remake of the 1976 film Sparkle with Jordin Sparks and, according to reports, she was healthy and in good spirits. Her latest musical release was 2009's I Look To You, which was her seventh studio album. In total, she sold 170 million albums and singles, easily making her one of the best-selling artists of all high time.

Of course, one of her biggest hits was 1992's "I Will Always Love You" off the soundtrack for The Bodyguard, which she also starred in with Kevin Costner. The single went quadruple platinum in the U.S. alone.

It goes without saying that Houston has had a storied career and it's one that has brought her almost too many awards to list. She received six Grammys, two Emmys, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards, among many others. You have to imagine this is going to have a profound impact on tomorrow night's 54th Annual Grammy Awards, its presenters, and its performers.

On February 11, 2012 Whitney Houston was pronounced dead. Her cause of death is currently unclear, but despite recent reports that Whitney had been clean for some time now and was planning a comeback, the Twittersphere has been bubbling with heated debates about whether or not Whitney's death was drug related. After all, it is reasonable to wonder if Whitney's well-known battle with drug addiction might have finally taken a toll, right? We are all well aware that it has been going on for years, which is probably the reason why I keep seeing Facebook statuses that say things like "I'm sad, but I'm not surprised." One fellow even replied to my Tweets about respecting Whitney's memory with a dirty comment about her throwing crack parties. (My reply to him contained excessive amounts of profane language so I can't repeat it here, but I'll just say that it was quite harsh. If you're offended by sensitive language then it's a bad idea to say something dumb to me on Twitter.)

Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48. Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown. News of Houston's death came on the eve of music's biggest night — the Grammy Awards. It's a showcase where she once reigned, and her death was sure to case a heavy pall on Sunday's ceremony. Houston's longtime mentor Clive Davis was to hold his annual concert and dinner Saturday; it was unclear if it was going to go forward.

Christie Vetoes Marriage Bill

Lambda Legal
"We are disappointed that Governor Christie did not do what is right for New Jersey families, but we are not discouraged," said Hayley Gorenberg, Lambda Legal Deputy Legal Director. "There are many roads to justice, and Governor Christie's veto is an unfortunate detour to marriage equality for New Jersey's same-sex couples and their families. We'll continue to make our case for equality with our plaintiffs in court. We also stand by our colleagues at Garden State Equality, working to gain support for a veto override in the legislature."
GLAAD
“Today, Governor Christie abandoned a majority of New Jersey voters, as well as the officials elected to represent them, who believe that every committed couple should be able to marry the person they love,” said Mike Thompson, Acting President of GLAAD. “As public support for marriage equality continues to grow, however, we are hopeful that the state legislature will continue its work to provide loving gay and lesbian couples with the vital protections that only marriage can afford.”
Freedom To Marry
By vetoing the bill that would ensure that all loving, committed New Jersey couples and their families can share in the freedom to marry, with all its protections and meaning, Governor Christie planted his feet firmly on the wrong side of history. Fortunately, his ‘no’ will not be America’s – or New Jersey’s – last word. It is simply an obstacle we overcome as we continue on the road to liberty and justice for all. Freedom to Marry will work steadily over the next months – and throughout the entire remainder of the legislative session, as necessary – supporting local families, leaders, and advocates as they make the case to their lawmakers and win the extra handful of votes needed to override the veto and do right by all families.

BREAKING: DOJ Won't Defend Laws That Block Benefits For Gay Military Couples

Talking Points Memo has a major scoop from the DOJ.
The Obama Justice Department has concluded that legislation banning same-sex couples from receiving military and veterans benefits violates the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment and will no longer defend the statute in court, Attorney General Eric Holder wrote in a letter to Congressional leaders on Friday.

“The legislative record of these provisions contains no rationale for providing veterans’ benefits to opposite-sex couples of veterans but not to legally married same-sex spouses of veterans,” Holder wrote. “Neither the Department of Defense nor the Department of Veterans Affairs identified any justifications for that distinction that would warrant treating these provisions differently from Section 3 of DOMA.”
Obviously this latest move will cause an immediate firestorm of condemnation and wailing from the enemies of civil equality. HURRAY!
